We strive to keep you active, so we encourage anyone to see one of our Physical Therapists for a screening at the first sign of a limiting issue. And, of course we want to see anyone who has medical conditions, illnesses or injuries that limit their ability to move and function.

Therefore we customize your physical therapy program to get you to your optimal level of functioning. This includes encouraging and teaching activities and lifestyle changes that improve overall health and well-being and prevent further injury.

Here are some reasons to schedule a visit with an Altru Physical Therapist

Therapeutic exercises and manual therapy techniques mobilize and treat joint and soft tissue. This can relieve pain and restore muscle and joint function and can also prevent pain from returning.

Always see a Physical Therapist before going into surgery. Many times, Physical Therapy can manage pain and promote proper healing from an injury so that surgery is not needed. If surgery is required, pre-surgery Physical Therapy makes your return-to-activity smoother. When you go into surgery stronger and in better shape, recovery can be easier and faster.

Our Physical Therapists understand how different sports have increased risk for specific types of injuries (such as stress fractures for distance runners). Our Physical Therapists design appropriate recovery/prevention exercise programs for you to ensure your fastest recovery and your greatest longevity in your sport.

If you’re having trouble standing, walking or moving—no matter your age—physical therapy can help. Stretching and strengthening exercises help restore your ability to move. Physical Therapists can properly fit individuals with an assistive device or assess for orthotic prescription. An individual care plan can be created to ensure safety and best performance, based on the activity that is important to you.

If you’re having balance issues, our Physical Therapists have exercises that safely challenge your balance to mimic real-life situations. Therapists also help you improve coordination with assistive devices to help with safer walking. Physical Therapy also has effective protocols that can quickly restore proper vestibular functioning and reduce or eliminate symptoms of dizziness or vertigo.

If you’ve lost function and movement due to a stroke, Physical Therapy will strengthen weakened parts of the body, improve balance and normalize gait. Physical therapists can also improve a stroke patients’ ability to be more independent around the home to get back to the activities of daily living.

As part of an overall diabetes management plan, exercise can help effectively control blood sugar.  Additionally, people with diabetes may have problems with sensation in their feet and legs. Physical therapists can help provide and educate these patients on proper foot care to prevent further problems down the road.

As individuals age, they may develop arthritis or osteoporosis or need a joint replacement. Physical therapists are experts in helping patients recover from joint replacement, and manage arthritic or osteoporotic conditions.

While patients may complete cardiac rehabilitation after a heart attack or procedure, Physical Therapy is highly encouraged to ensure daily functioning is not affected.
